A clinical pharmacist is an expert in medicines; a pharmacist is trained for 5 years at university and also during work based placements. Some pharmacists complete further clinical training after qualifying and this may include training to prescribe medicines.
Our clinical pharmacists will work with individual patients to make sure the medicines they have been prescribed continue to be of benefit to each patient, taking in to account any changes in symptoms or clinical circumstances. This will be a medication review appointment, patients are encouraged to ask questions about medicines they are prescribed and also those they purchase when they meet with the clinical pharmacist.
As well as seeing patients to discuss their individual medicines the clinical pharmacist will form part of the multidisciplinary practice team providing advice to the doctors and nurses about the best medicines to prescribe for patients who have complex medication needs.
